Joanne Ma, a mother of two with autism and a behavioral consultant helping families with children with the same problem, has created a different decor for her home. The goal was to
provide a space where children could live and, above all, develop. Dressed in minimalist colors and simple style – given the characteristic hypersensitivity of these children – the house was
decorated with walls and white shelves with black boxes, so that their children remained comfortable and that the identification of their toys was facilitated. Each space was strategically
thought out and organized, where the main objective was to develop certain aspects of the development and maturation of children with this disorder. The organization was thus an
essential point in this decoration. In addition to having used specific shades in it, Joanne has made a division of the toys, which are often the obsession of autistic child. The key was to
categorize toy boxes: one for the daughter, one for the child, and a third for toys that could be used in play for two. The use of shelves, as we mentioned, besides being used for easy
recognition of toys by children, stimulates communication with parents. How? Leaving the things they like on the shelves, visible but out of reach, increases the possibility for the child with
autism to communicate with parents.
