Our home must reflect our personality but, above all, it must adapt to our routines. We need to know them well to be able to think of the perfect layout and organization for our home.

This is a fundamental process for our home to be 100% functional and allow us to create simpler routines, which will save us time and quality of life. Whether in the present moment or thinking about a future, which we hope for soon, of resuming our usual lives.

Here at home, there are only two of us and our kitten. We both have our own business, so we have little time to take care of our home.

At the beginning of this year, we moved house and when we visited it for the first time, I soon realized that it would have to undergo a lot of changes so that it would become more practical and would work perfectly for our day-to-day, which usually involves many hours to work outside the home and often from home.

The big intervention I made was in the social area, which for me is the most important area, as it is where we spend most of our time at home.

The social area of our house was composed of an entrance hall, living and dining room, kitchen, and a social bathroom. Which, moreover, is the traditional configuration that we find in most Portuguese houses. Everything was demolished!

Creating an open space in the area we use most of our home greatly facilitates our daily routines. Cleaning is much simpler and faster, because we have eliminated many corners and nooks formed by the walls that existed and the fluidity of the space has become more organic and easy, as there are no longer a series of access doors to the various spaces in the social zone.

The choice of materials for the house is something that we must also consider very well.

In ours I chose to place mostly light furniture, where the dust is less easily noticed, and for the floor I chose a medium wood tone, which is simpler to keep with a clean appearance. On very dark or very light floors, dust, hair, fluff, etc. can be easily noticed.

Only in the kitchen area did I take a chance and put a white floor, but I chose a gold calacatta marble finish which, despite being white, has brownish veins that mix with any dirt that may exist on the floor.

To have a practical home, all objects and furniture must fulfill a function and that is why we have placed only essential furniture. Once again, cleaning the house becomes simpler and faster in this way and the less crowded environments, leave our mind cleaner and healthier.

Besides, we decided what objects we needed in our social zone and where we would store them so that they were always at hand, when needed. In this way, we organize the loose objects over the furniture and inside it, using several storage boxes and dividers in the drawers and shelves. With this exercise, we managed to have all our objects in order and bring more peace and well-being to our home.

On the other hand, when we always keep the same objects in the same places, with repetition these processes are automated and that alone makes us save time at home.

The social bathroom must also have our attention. Here at home it is the most used, by our guests and by us, because it is the only one we have in the RC (social zone).

This space can and should be more daring, after all it is the bathroom designed for our guests and in it I have some treats for them – candles, air freshener, tissues, cotton disks, etc. However, more important than that is that in this space we have things that are useful to us in our day-to-day lives, so we don’t have to waste time and energy going to one of the private bathrooms.

For example, I like having my hand cream in this bathroom to put on after washing the dishes and floss to use after meals.

And because plants bring immense benefits to mental and physical health and elevate our mood and general well-being, they could not be missing from our decor.

They are effective in reducing stress and have the ability to make us feel happier and more optimistic here at home.
